Mumbai is a city as busy as a bee which is quite evident from the congestion in the Mumbai suburban railway network. Thus the Mumbai government decided to give an alternate mode of connectivity to this busy city- the Mumbai Metro.
2006 witnessed the laying of the foundation stone of this exemplary project. However, certain operational and policy issues led to delays in the Mumbai metro project. And the government could commission only three metro routes until now. Furthermore, of these, two routes are new and only partially operating.
About Mumbai Metro
The Mumbai Metro is a Rapid Transit system. Its primary motive is to reduce the congestion in the suburban railway network. The project consists of three phases and will start operating by October 2026.
This entire metro project will comprise fourteen metro lines and an added metrolite line. And all these lines combined will span a total of 356.972 kilometres and serve 286 stations.
The project’s total cost, excluding the already operating Line 1, is approximately ₹82,172 crores. And this investment will be funded by a mix of equity, bilateral, multilateral, and syndicated debt.
The Journey So Far
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone of the Mumbai metro project in June 2006. However, the work could only begin by February 2008.
Due to the various late environmental clearances, protests, and land acquisition troubles, the stakeholders could deliver the first Line (Line 1) only by June 2014. The trial run was conducted in May 2013. Two more routes, 2A and seven, are partially operating. The Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray flagged off both on 2nd April 2022. The commercial operations took off the same day at 8 PM.
